FAQs
What is the Barbican Map?
A free, online, interactive map of the Barbican Estate in central London, created by Ben Roper. The map allows you to toggle between levels, see accessibility features like lifts and stairs, and suggests common routes to landmarks like the Barbican Centre and Conservatory
Can I use the Barbian Map as a part of my own project or organisation?
The Barbican Map exists to unlock this beautiful place for more people. You are welcome to link to this website or directly to the map using barbicanmap.com/map. If you want to integrate in any other way please drop me an email and let's chat
Can I have my business shown on the map?
I'm considering adding curated points of interest in the future, so please get in touch if you're keen to be included
Why did you make the map?
I love the Barbican and care about seeing spaces used for the good of community. I'd also already done a substantial chunk of the work as part of another project, so it seemed like a golden opportunity to magnify the benefit. I also believe in making good experiences for people, which means 'human made' (without generative AI) and without advertising, so I knew I wanted this to be available to everyone for free
Did you use AI to make the Barbican Map?
No, I'm strongly against generative AI, so every part of the experience has been made by human hands and minds
Can I navigate using the map?
The Barbican Map is designed to be a rough guide for navigation, but in the real world things can change, and even this map doesn't show every single detail. I've tried to be consisent and thorough, especially with accessibility details like the locations of lifts and ramps, but bear in mind it's not an exact 1-to-1 recreation of the world
What are some possible uses for the map?
The Barbican Map is ideal for adding some fun as you adventure into the estate for the first time. Hand it to a kid and let them lead the way by spotting things on the map and relating them to the real thing. It's a fantastic way to learn about navigation in a genuinely challenging, but contained environment. Equally the map is very useful as a way to understand where and how you can access the space, particularly if you have accessibility requirements, like if you use a wheelchair
Is there anywhere on the map that I'm not allowed to go?
As with any space and any map, you should still pay full attention to your actual surroundings, and heed any signs. I haven't mapped anywhere private at the time of launch, but that could change, so if you see somewhere that says 'private' or 'residents only', then stay out. Just because it's on the map, doesn't necessarily mean you get to go there
How do I get to the Barbican Centre?
Open the map and select 'Common Routes' in the menu. You will see some coloured lines appear, highlighting some suggested routes from both Moorgate and Barbican Underground stations. Routes that include stairs and labelled '(Steps)'
Is BarbicanMap.com linked to the Barbican Centre, or the Barbican Estate?
No, BarbicanMap.com is a private project with no affiliation to the Barbican Centre, estate, or the City of London corporation
